Bolivia is country of wildly diverse landscapes in the heart of the Andes mountains. The longest and youngest mountain range, in Bolivia the Andes are at their widest. In the western half of the country the high, arid plains of the altiplano lead up to the snow capped 6,000m peaks of the Cordilleras. The mountain ranges run N-NW and drop sharply off to the east, from hanging glaciers and jagged black peaks down the grassy ridges to the misty cloud forest, where the cloud bank of the upper Amazon watershed forms almost daily. The foothill ridges rapidly lose elevation and the climate becomes tropical, with the lower serranias being cloaked in rainforest. The last ridges give way to the pampas, the lush flatlands that stretch through Brazil to the mouth of the Amazon.
